SEMENTES CENTRE in Mossoro in north-west Brazil. In 2008 our first Jersey project was to help build a community centre attached to a small church in the favela, or slum area, of the town. The centre provides a social support programme for the children, including homework club, health education, music and drama, which helps to keep children off the streets of the ‘favela’, where they are exposed to dangers, including abuse, drug and alcohol related crime and violence - and risk becoming part of Brazil’s huge street children population.
